Mr. Crowes Garden Era Sessions
The term “sessions” is rather broad here and
includes everything that is known to have
been worked on prior to the sessions for Shake Your Money Maker.
This was doubtless a long period of time during which
numerous songs were written, recorded, and
performed live on stage. Although
numerous songs were certainly recorded,
many of these probably never saw any light
of day and remain unknown. Based on known
demos and interviews, the following songs can be included
in Mr. Crowes Garden Era “sessions”:
- 113
- Carolyn's Psychic (mistakenly referred to as Karl the Psychic)
- Front Porch Sermon (mistakenly referred to as The Long Day)
- Gravedigger Blues (mistakenly referred to as Redneck Blues)
- If
- Its Not fair
- Serving Time
- Slap Of Fate (mistakenly referred to as Medicine Man)
- Your Definition

Shake Your Money Maker Sessions
The Shake Your Money Maker sessions occurred over a period
of 6 seeks in late 1989 and/or early 1990.
14 songs were recorded during the sessions
(13 originals and the cover of Hard To Handle).
Of the 13 originals, 12 were written specifically
for the upcoming album. The only hold over was
She Talks To Angels which was recorded during these
sessions but had been written in 1988:
- Charming Mess
- Could I've Been So Blind
- Don't Wake Me
- Hard To Handle
- Jealous Again
- Live Too Fast Blues/Mercy Sweet Moan
- Seeing Things
- She Talks To Angels
- Sister Luck
- Stare It Cold
- Struttin' Blues
- Thick N' Thin
- Twice As Hard
- Waiting Guilty
- This Ain't No Election (mistakenly referred to as Mercenary Man)*
* This song was never released but was recorded for either SYMM or TSHAMC.

"Souled Out" Sessions
The term sessions here is technically a misnomer.
It is highly unlikely that there were ever any
actual formal studio sessions for what was to be the
Souled Out album. A number of songs were played
live on the SYMM tour, and the band had decided
on an album name; however after the band finished
touring in late 1991, they scrapped all of the songs
they had been playing and wrote a whole new set of
songs which were recorded for the Southern Harmony
and Musical Companion album. The songs that may
have made up these sessions due to the fact
that they were played live include:
- Bruises and Pills
- Kick The Devil Outta Me
- Miserable
- On That Hollow Day
- * Words You Throw Away
- You're Such A Pity
- You're Wrong
* This song was supposedly recorded on its own before TSHAMC.

The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion Sessions
The Southern Harmony sessions occurred
over a period of 8 days at Southern Tracks
Studio, Atlanta in early
1992. The band wrote 15 songs for the
sessions and recorded at least 13 songs,
including originals and several covers,
for the album. Aside from the 10 original songs listed below
(slow Sting Me and Sting Me are one song)
the band probably also wrote but
may not have recorded Bewildered, Exit, The Fear
Years, Girl From A Pawnshop, and On The Hallow Night.
- 99 lbs
- Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye
- Black Moon Creeping
- Darling Of The Underground Press
- Hotel Illness
- My Morning Song
- No Speak, No Slave
- Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
- Remedy
- Sting Me
- Slow Sting Me
- Sometimes Salvation
- Thorn In My Pride

Tall/Amorica Sessions
The Tall/Amorica Sessions consisted of several sessions.
The bulk of the Tall Sessions occurred at Conway
Studio in Los Angeles in in late 1993 and early
1994; but there was at least one other earlier session at
an unknown location other than Conway Studio.
Some of the songs from the Tall sessions were
eventually released in their Conway Studio form
(Feathers, Buttermilk Waltz, Song of the Flesh).
Months later the band returned for the Amorica
Sessions which occurred at Sound City Studio
in Los Angeles in mid 1994.
15 songs were recorded
at Sound City Studio and of those 13 songs went on to make
up what became Amorica - perhaps the two missing songs are Under A Mountain, and Grinnin'). (
5 outright new songs and
10 songs played either live or recorded earlier, 1
cover was also recorded which may or may not be part
of this 15). Numerous sources of these sessions have
circulated in the last few years
(See circulated source info for our belief that Tall - the complete album and potential b-sides - has been circulated as Source 3.).
Very Early Tall Sessions at Kingsway Studio Session
(Daniel Lanois’ studio),
New Orleans, LA - October 11th or 12th, 1992
Most likely the following circulated songs were recorded at Kingsway
since they were the only tracks
the band had played up to that point on the High as
the Moon tour, except for Thunderstorm, which was
debuted within a month of this session:
- Bewildered
- Exit
- The Fear Years
The following songs were probably recorded here as well:
- Girl From The Pawnshop (early version)
- Nonfiction (very early version)
- On That Hallow Night (aka On That Hollow Day)
- Thorn's Progress *
* released in late 1993 and evolved live on stage from an embionic jam to a live version of the released song. The song could have been recorded earlier than these sessions
Early Tall Sessions at Unknown Location (probably at Conway Studio)
The odds of these songs being recorded at Conway are quite good.
She Gave Good Sunflower was played live in early 1993 without lyrics
until 6/26/93. The last time it was played without lyrics was 5/31/93.
It is therefore 99% impossible that the song was recorded prior to 5/31/93.
CR stated that Source 1 contained Tall Session
songs. All of the Tall Sessions officially took
place at Conway, so it is likely these songs were recorded there. If we
assume that the "very early version" of Tied Up And Swallowed is in fact the
Conway version (aka "early version" of Tied Up and Swallowed), then all of
these songs are definately from Conway Studio.
- Bitter Bitter You
- She Gave Good Sunflower
- Tied Up And Swallowed (very early version)
- Title Song
Tall Sessions at Conway Studio
Source 2 and Source 3
contain confirmed Conway songs, and based on BMI
all other noncirculated songs are from the exact same session.
- Unknown Tall/Amorica Song #1 (either "Painkiller" or "Wind and Wood Heart")
- A Conspiracy (early version)
- Appalachian Opera Minus The Opera
- Buttermilk Waltz
- Cursed Diamond (early version)
- Descending (early version)
- Dirty Haired Halo
- Evil Eye (early version)
- Feathers
- Grinnin' *
- High Head Blues (early version)
- I Wanna Be Your Man
- Low Down
- The Nowhere Stairs (not recorded under this title)
- One Cop Story
- Nonfiction (early version)
- P. 25 London (early version)
- Painkiller (see unknown Tall song #1 above)
- Song Of The Flesh
- Thunderstorm 6:54pm
- Tied Up And Swallowed (early version)
- Tornado
- Under A Mountain (early version) *
- Wind And Wood Heart (see unknown Tall song #1 above)
- Wiser Time (early version)
Note: Painkiller or Wind and Wood Heart may be the same song as Unknown Crowes Song #1
Note: * Under A Mountain and Grinnin' are possibly from the Sound City Amorica Sessions.

Demo Sources:
Source 1 - 6 song cassette (transferred to CDR, generally
circulated, March, 2001):
The Sweet Pickle Salad (SPS) tracks were
recorded over 3 days, ending or beginning on 8/15/93 at
Conway Studio. When CR handed the tape to a friend he
stated that they were the SPS tracks and some early Tall songs.
1. One Man’s Anger (SPS song)
2. Bitter Bitter You
3. She Gave Good Sunflower
4. Clothes And Food (SPS song mistakenly refered to as "Cry to Me Softly")
5. Title Song
6. Limits (SPS song mistakenly refered to as "Can't Let Go")
Source 2 - 8 song cassette (transferred to CDR), generally circulated,
Feb, 2002):
One side of a tape given to a band friend was transfered to CDR and circulated.
The contents of the other side of the tape have never circulated. A compilation of the
Crowe-only tracks from Sources 1 & 2
was put together by Acoustiking in March 2002 and was widely
circulated as “Tall Sessions”. The disc included 13 tracks,
the 11 Crowe tracks above, plus another Exit from an alternate
cassette source and a studio instrumental of Pastoral
(the original source containing Exit & Pastoral is unknown,
it was circulated in 1997 by itself,
so it is not associated with any other unreleased track) .
The first three songs on Source 2 are from an
earlier session from the last 5 songs.
The versions of Tornado and Dirty Haired Halo and
Thunderstorm 6:54pm are the same as Source 3.
1. Exit
2. The Fear Years
3. Bewildered
4. Dirty Haired Halo
5. Thunderstorm 6:54 pm
6. One Cop Story
7. Unkown Crowes Song (commonly refered to as "Wind And Wood Heart")
8. Tornado
Source 3 - 17 song cassette (transferred to CDR),
generally circulated as "Tall", June, 2003):
This source originally circulated as a 14 track
disc known as "The Amorica Demos" in May, 2003.
It is extremely likely that Source 3 is
the final version of Tall for the following reasons:
1) The band
recorded but officially scrapped 17 completed songs.
2)
Band members have specifically said they kept DATs of the
final album "Tall" which was scrapped.
3) It seems fairly
obvious that the DAT's the band kept and the 17 songs
that were scrapped are the same thing. Rich would not
refer to specifically 17 songs that were scrapped if he
had a DAT containing another amount of songs.
4) Feathers, Buttermilk Waltz,
and Song of the Flesh on source 3 are the same as the
released versions which are noted in liner notes as being
recorded at Conway.
5)
Tornado was recorded on Saturday January 29th, 1994,.
6) The Sound City Sessions began in May.
The Conway sessions ended sometime after January 1994
but at least a few months before May 1994. Therefore they must have
ended sometime between February and April (allowing for a bare minimum of
1 month off for Chris and Rich to "live" with the tapes).
Some time would be necessary to procure a new producer
and book Sound City, so it probable that the Conway sessions
ended in February or March of 1994.
Conclusions:
We know, based on fact #1-3, that Source 3 has the exact
same amount of songs as the final Tall album DAT.
We know that Source 3 is from Conway based on fact #4.
We know that Source 3 is could not have been compiled any earlier
than the end of January 1994 based on fact #5.
We know that the Conway Sessions
ended in March 1993 at the absolute latest based on fact #6.
Therefore Source 3 must be from Conway Studio from February or March.
It is very likely
that the 17 scrapped songs, the 17 song Source 3, and the DAT's
that the band has, are all one and the same thing: Tall.
We believe beyond any reasonable doubt, based on the above and on conversations with
people very close to the band, that Source 3 is Tall.
