The Stones were at the height og their popularity in 1966.
They were exposed to millions on television shows thoughout the year, they toured
Europe, America, Australia and the UK, and they released several hit singles, as well
as an album of new material, Aftermath, which was praised by critics. They also released
thier first live album. At this point the band was unstoppable. It is good they were unstoppable, because 1966 becan a brief decline for the Stones. They began work on the Beween the Buttons album which was the start of their breif trip into pop psychaledia. The Between the Buttons tracks were bouncy, goofy, and filled with references to drugs. They lacked the power of the singles that the band had released in 1965 and 1966 and they lacked the raw energy and honesty of the Aftermath album. However, the singles that the band was writing at the time did hold their own. The band wrote Let's Spend The Night Together and Ruby Tuesday in 1966, both of which recieved massive airplay. A new trend in rock was catching up to the Stones. The singles era was over and bands were releasing theme oriented albums. Contrived themes and the Stones edgy rock prooved to be a bad mix, as the edge was lost. Even though the Stones singles continued to be outstanding, their upcoming albums were held together more by a theme and less by solid content. The year may have begun a forgetable era for the Stones, but 1966 itself was probably the single most important year in the bands history. They prooved that they were around for the the long run, and they somehow managed to put themselves into every home in the world with endless TV performances and endless touring. |
