The Stones continued to amaze in 1971. They released Sticky Fingers on April 23rd, which had been recorded the previous year, and they went on a short Farewell Tour of England before the band moved to France. Even though Sticky Fingers had been released on 1971, much of the album has already been played on tour in 1970, so a major tour was not necessary.

The tour itself was short and a bit sloppy. Much of the tour went unrecorded and because of that, not much is known. However, the shows that are available are a bit weak. No plans were made for any live album, a phenomen which seemed to be reserved exclusively after US tours.

After the tour, the band went to France and recorded much of the basic tracks for Exile on Main Street. The band was cooped up like prisoners in Keith's basement, writing and recording for months.
