The Stones recorded most of and released It's Only Rock and Roll in
1974. On April 14th, the band premiered their concert movie of the 1972 US Tour, Ladies And
Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones. This movie was actually the second movie by that name, the
first was a made for TV presentation of the Marquee Club gig in 1971, broadcast on French TV.
At some point during the year, guitarist Mick Taylor left the group. His break with the group
was cited over musical and professional differences. Rumor has it that Taylor felt cheated
for not receiving song writing credits on a variety of songs. Also, rumors abound of Taylor
leaving the studio after hearing the edited version of Time Waits For No One which completely
cut out his long Santana-esq solo at the end. In the end, it appeared that the solos Taylor
wished to add to the Rolling Stones songs were unwanted by a group which had, for the most part,
avoided long solos like the plague. The split between Taylor and the Stones was relatively
amicable. The band was sorry to lose him and he to this day regrets (to a degree) leaving the
band. Taylor official left the band on December 12th, 1974, although it is commonly asserted that he
actually left the band much earlier in the year, it was only until December that the band
accepted his departure and announced the search for a new guitarist.
Although Taylor had played his last show as a Rolling Stone, is was not his last show with
the Rolling Stones. Taylor appeared for several songs on stage during the 1981 tour in Kansas City.
He also played once in 1986 with Keith Richards guesting at the Lone Star Cafe in New York City.
The search for a new guitarist would begin in late 1974 and 1975. An official guitarist would not be announced until after the band had recorded a new album and toured in 1975. One other tidbit of note from 1974 was the broadcast of the First Brussels show in 1973 on the King Biscuit Flower Hour. This broadcast became one of the most popular of all Rolling Stones bootlegs. It was eventually reworked from the original KBF archives and is now available unedited at many "import" record stores. |
